The energy crisis has been plaguing the news, and our minds, for what feels like forever already. With the average UK household seeing an 80% increase in rates for their energy in it’s not exactly giving us that warm, fuzzy feeling.

With the price cap increasing again as of October, it’s means we as businesses and as consumers are going to have to try out hardest to blunt the impact.

Before the latest crisis, more than a million older people in Britain were already living in fuel poverty and many more risked their health by rationing food and heating to keep bills down, and it’s a collective problem that needs a collective solution, the lack of any apparent action by central government means we will need to be more aware than ever of our neighbours, friends and family members well being.

Helping others this winter!

We have been fortunate enough to secure some of our most popular winter warmers for the 4th quarter, this includes our recycled wool blankets found here which will retail at just £19.99. We as a team and small community business have decided that we will be donating a number of these to the elderly and vulnerable in our local area before the winter cold snap arrives. This will depend on the amount that can be produced before the Christmas rush but we are hoping that even this small gesture will make winter a little more bearable for some.

Warm feet works best!

The feet are ideally suited to helping us keep a stable body temperature, for a few reasons.

They – like the hands – have a large surface area as well as specialised blood vessels which can be opened up to pass high volumes of blood through them and therefore offload heat quickly when required. When not required, the blood vessels are constricted.

This, coupled with the fact that the feet (and hands) are at the end of our limbs and don’t have much muscle (which produces heat) means that they cool down much more than other regions of the body.

Small Business’ will need YOU more than ever!

The stark truth is that for many perfectly viable and successful businesses this could be the straw that breaks the camels back. Winter can be a testing time, if the weather is unkind to us then energy costs could be even more damaging to business survival. At the very best these bills will result in an inability to invest in business growth and support the hugely important part of every business – our employees. If large numbers of otherwise viable small businesses fail, the damage from the recession, which may have already started, will be much longer lasting.
