It is the bank holiday weekend and the team all know what they will be doing for the long weekend, the sun it set to be shining and hopefully we can finally start to feel those summery warm rays on our skin. So with a promising forecast grab those sunnies and your hat as we have gathered a short list of our favourite picnic spots we think you should be enjoying in the next few days, remember the bubbly too.

Witslandpound Reservoir, near Blackmoor Gate

If you want somewhere slightly more secluded you’ll find great spots in this tranquil waterside location, the lake is surrounded by conifers and offers beautiful views from every area so take a stroll around the lake and claim your turf.

Codden Hill, Bishops Tawton

If you are one for panoramic views then the walk up Codden is so worth it, it has some of the most spectacular sweeping views across North Devon. Sit and admire as you become part of nature immersed amongst the lush green fields.

Heddon Valley

This is a brilliant spot for families, with so many footpaths you’ll be spoilt for choice. Either stay along the river or take the pushchair friendly pathway leading down to the beach at Heddons Mouth. If you prefer higher ground take the Highveer Point coast path around to Woody Bay. Upon your return you can always stop at the picturesque Hunters Inn and quench your thirst with an ice cold alcoholic beverage.

Watermouth Cove

This gorgeous little bay is in a secluded spot, making it perfect for enjoying a quiet lunch or evening picnic. Sit and allow the soothing sounds of the tide relax your mind from a busy week, you might even spot a dolphin, porpoise or seal if the tide is right so binoculars are a must.

Instow Beach

If you are after an evening setting then Instow is said to be the best beach to view the setting sun in North Devon. Let your stresses gently float away as you cuddle under a blanket and admire the colours of the sky dancing off the reflection of the shore and nearby boats.

The Hangman Hills, Combe Martin

It is a steep climb but one the village locals always rave about, especially for the jaw dropping views from the summits of little and great hangman. You can admire the striking coastline from great height in one direction and the beautiful rolling rural countryside in the other whilst feeling ontop of the world.

Hartland Heritage Coast

Soak up the rays at this beautiful location, you’ll be mesmerised by the sheer drop cliffs and glistening light bouncing off the ocean, be on the look out for peregrine falcons, seals or porpoise. Some of the best spots are a bit of a trek but what a great way to work up an appetite for lunch.

Valley of the Rocks, Lynton

An other-worldly landscape of huge jagged rocks accompanied with earthy grasslands and miles of dramatic coastline, is the setting for the extraordinary part of the South West Coast Path. Situated in the heart of Exmoor National Park, you’ll feel completely at one with nature whilst you sit on a rock staring out into the vast depths of the ocean. If heights are not your thing, find a spot on lower ground and admire the vast species of bird and don’t forget the famous goats.

Lundy Island

We’ve just got to throw this one in, it is a full day’s trip but so worth it; catch the boat from Ilfracombe Harbour and experience island life upon the cliffs of Lundy, if you’re feeling energetic walk the entire island in one day. It is a haven for those who love wildlife spotting you’ll be spoilt for choice with sika deer, pygmy shrews, bats, soay sheep, goats, highland cattle, ponies, seals and the famously rare puffins. It is an unforgettable experience and once the boat docks upon your return, come and visit our shop on the harbour as you are passing and tell us about your day.
